In the below example, we have specified EST as the time zone.Ĭreate table sales (id integer, product_name varchar(100), purchase_date timestamp, sale_date timestamp ,Īmount integer) insert into sales values (1, 'Kellogs', null, to_timestamp( ' 07:00:00', 'YYYY-MM-DD HH:MI:SS') So first, how do we get a TIMESTAMPZ value?Įither we populate a TIMESTAMPZ column with a string literal containing the time zone (e.g., ' 13:00:00 IST'), or we use the TIMEZONE function to create a TIMESTAMPZ value from a timestamp. If the time zone is not specified in a TIMESTAMPZ type, it's assumed to be UTC. The TIMESTAMPZ data type captures the time zone along with the timestamp. Thus Japan and England are in different time zones. of any given day can be different in different locations around the world we have time zones to capture this info.įor example, when it's sunrise in Japan, England is still in the dark, waiting for the earth's rotation to bring it to face the sun. Note how the "now" column has both the date and time. We used TO_DATE to create a date from a string, and we used date arithmetic to get tomorrow's date from today. We've used Redshift's built-in functions to get today's date and time in the example above. ![]() Select current_date today, current_timestamp now, current_time time_now, to_date( '28-10-2010', 'DD-MM-YYYY') Using a function to create a datetime from some other input.Selecting a datetime column in the query. No, we can get datetime results in two ways: But how do we get the results of those types of queries? TIMESTAMPZ: Timestamp along with the time zone infoįor more information, check out the AWS documentation.TIMESTAMP: Includes both the date and time.TIMEZ: Time with time zone info (since time in New York is behind that in Tokyo, for instance, time zones reflect this difference).Like most other relational databases such as MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, etc., Redshift can handle and manipulate time series data.įirstly, let's look at which data types for time series are supported by Redshift and what kind of data they can hold. Redshift is a database provided as a part of AWS (Amazon Web Services), based on the Postgres database, but with some differences. Time series data holds the date and/or time information and is different from string or numeric data since it has components like day, month, year, hours, etc., that we might want to access/compare/modify.įor example, we might want sales in the month of May or to find the difference in two dates as the number of months. If the second date or time is earlier than the first date or time, the result is negative. This article will cover how to work with time series/datetime data in Redshift. If the second date or time is later than the first date or time, the result is positive. The expressions must both contain the specified date or time part. If you are finding the difference in hours between two timestamps, 8:30:00 and 10:00:00, the result is 2 hours.ĭate|time|timetz|timestamp: A DATE, TIME, TIMETZ, or TIMESTAMP column or expressions that implicitly convert to a DATE, TIME, TIMETZ, or TIMESTAMP. If you are finding the difference in hours between two timestamps, 01-01-2009 8:30:00 and 01-01-2009 10:00:00, the result is 2 hours. In this case, the function returns 1 year despite the fact that these dates are only one day apart. ![]() For example, suppose that you're calculating the difference in years between two dates, 12-31-2008 and 01-01-2009.
![]() When it was introduced to the market, everyone was mesmerised by this capability. If you are wondering how this works, all you have to do is hold your device up to whatever you are reading and the app will translate it to your native language in seconds. Therefore, you should expect to see some Google Translate features on this tool.Īccording to resume writing services, WordLens rose in popularity back in 2010 because its Android and iPhone apps were among the first to offer camera-based and real-time translations. If you need a real and convenient dictionary with a rich context, Linguee is the best. It is a useful tool for people who have knowledge of a second language and want to attempt some translation themselves, or for language learners wanting to see words and phrases in real-life contexts. Linguee does not have spoken word capabilities, therefore, you can’t use it for phrases or quick words that you may find on tweets or Facebook posts. While this tool can’t translate web pages and documents, you can type in words or phrases in languages that you don’t understand to see their meanings and other documents on the web where the word is used properly so that you can see it in action. Linguee is more of a search engine and a translation dictionary than a translation service. The majority of users have praised the Windows phone app due to the OCR features and the app’s voice capabilities which can speak in different native languages. After doing this, the app will translate onto your screen immediately. Users can make use of the spoken word feature for some of the languages supported and the bookmarks in any browser using one click.Īmong the reasons why you should use Bing Translate are the text recognition and OCR features which allow you to hold the app up to unfamiliar text and characters. It also allows users to vote translations either up or down depending on the accuracy. Most developers use it to power app translation features because Google makes them pay for accessing it.īing translator supports several languages with a built-in auto-detection that can translate uploaded documents and web pages. This Microsoft product has the distinction of being a translation tool with a free API. Bing Translatorīing Translator is one of the best translation tools that can be used on a Windows phone. Having said that, it’s one of the best free and accessible options available today. The failings of Google Translate, namely its lack of subtlety and inability to consider cultural contexts, have been well documented and, although it has made some real improvements in recent years, it’s still unreliable for professional situations. The audio component is another feature that makes it useful for travellers. While using Google Translate, you can download language packs so that you don’t have to drain your mobile data when you are out and about or when you’re not connected to Wi-Fi, meaning it’s ideal for use whilst travelling. Through the auto-detection setting, this tool will automatically translate any webpage or text to your preferred language, even if you don’t know what language the original text is written in. It has been integrated into other Google products such as Chrome and some Android apps and currently supports 109 different languages. ![]() Google Translate is probably the most widely known translation programme out there. ![]() Today, we are going to go through some of the most popular automated translation tools so you can assess how and when you might be able to utilise them.
